CITY SCAPE He act entirely unmindful of the vibrant with life and energy of urban New York. His photo is not packed with image of young people as well as flourishing quarter. Of course, ultramodern buildings sight of dazziling gorgeousness is not seen among the his photos. He look through shadows overhung worn-out buildings half soaked in the shade like lefted behind modernized urban. What he fixed on the film is an air of mystic silence about deserted back street of New York, fantasy from shadow overhung outside wall of 19C style's building and affection for going-out things. He look at figure of metropolitan New York coexisted modernism and classicalism overclouded with melancocholy etranze. He fixed mysterious and vivid attraction dwelled everything over obscured building in the New York on the white and black film. He make a picture of multi-dimensional space-time continuum appeared by crossing from multiple sides and lines. His eyes consists of firm and dynamic frame and dramatic lights, however, what he made a picture of space is rather permeated with classic elegance than dry intenseness. The buildings within his eyeshot is ordinary buildings everywhere of New York, but what he taken buildings is not structure to have prictical use. That is another face what New York have a big and modern urban. 그는 뉴욕의 현란한 도시공간의 활기를 일체 무시했다. 그의 사진에는 젊은이의 모습도 번화가도 찍혀 있지 않다. 호화스런 초현대식 건물의 모습도 보이지 않는다. 그는 현대화에서 남겨진 듯한 그늘 속에 모습이 반쯤 잠긴 낡은 건물들에 드리워진 그림자를 들여다본다. 그가 필름에 정착시킨 것은 뉴욕의 인기척이 없는 뒷골목에 떠도는 신비한 정적과 19세기적인 건물의 낡은 외벽에 드리운 그림자가 주는 환상성, 그리고 소멸되어 가는 것들에 대한 애정인 것이다. 그는 현대와 고전의 시간이 공존하고 있는 메가로폴리스 뉴욕의 모습을 우수에 젖은 에트랑제의 눈길로 바라보았고, 지금까지 아무도 눈여겨보려고 하지 않았던 뉴욕의 이름없는 건물의 구석구석에 깃들여 있는 불가사의하고 생생한 매력을 흑백사진으로 정착시켰다. 그는 뛰어난 조형성으로 다양한 면과 선분의 교차에 의해서 출현하는 다차원적인 시공간의 연속체를 그려내고 있는 것이다. 그의 사진이 단호하고 다이내믹한 프레이밍과 드라마틱한 빛으로 구성되어 있으나, 그가 그려낸 공간은 건조한 강렬함보다는 오히려 고전적인 엘레강스로 충만되어 있다. 그의 눈길이 닿는 건물들은 뉴욕의 어느 곳에서나 볼 수 있는 일상적인 것이지만, 그가 찍은 것은 실용적인 용도를 가진 그런 건축물아 아니다. 거기에는 오랜 시간의 축적과 그에 감응하는 이방인의 심상이 찍혀 있는 것이다. 그래서 그의 사진은 인화지 위에 기록된 것 이상의, 짙은 감상과 현실을 초월한 시적인 분위기를 나타내게 된다. 그것은 뉴욕이라고 하는 거대한 현대적 도시가 가지고 있는 또 하나의 얼굴이다. / 김승곤 (Kim, Seung-kon)
